SAE INSTITUTE RECORDING INITIATIVE

Aug/Oct 2005

This innovative feature of SAE is creating considerable success within New Zealand secondary school music departments.

The Studio Recording Initiative offered school music groups the opportunity to make a recording at SAE's industry standard studios   free of charge.

Key Features of the Studio Recording Initiative

  • Each group will visit SAE Institute recording studios for a
    2-hour period.
  • The students will have a brief tour through SAE's facilities (including 3 recording studios, and the post-production,
    MIDI and mastering suites).
  • The students will be given a brief description of the role of the audio engineer and the academic options provided by SAE Institute from Diploma to BA (Hons) degree.
  • A studio recording of a rehearsed piece of music
(selected by arrangement prior to the visit) will be made.
  • The piece of music can be original, and in any genre
(from rock to string quartet). Vocalists can also be included.
  • SAE Diploma in Engineering students will be undertaking the recording under the direct supervision of an SAE lecturer.
  • Any other students in the visiting group will be able to stay in the control room and observe the recording process.
  • Students from the music group will be able to listen to and comment on their performance, and re-record sections where appropriate.

All students will then be able to observe the process of finally mixing their piece.

  • The completed piece will be transferred to a CD.
  • The CD will be given to the teacher.
  • Limited to Years 12 and 13.

CLASSICAL MUSIC RECORDINGS AT SAE AUCKLAND

April/May 2005
SAE Institute is often associated with recording rock, pop and rap. In order to widen the recording options and experiences of our students, SAE New Zealand always undertakes new initiatives to include classical music recording.

Franz Joseph Haydn's String Quartet No 39, was performed by four young women from nearby Diocesan School for Girls. Having practiced this challenging piece they came into the studio where two of our students had volunteered to make a recording. These students were solely responsible for microphone placement, rehearsing, recording and post-production evaluation.

Recording acoustic classical instruments is a special challenge for young audio engineers, as the ensemble has to be recorded as one group. Although the instruments are not recorded and mixed individually, the recording must ensure that there is a degree of separation between them – in this case the two violins, viola and cello.

As well as seeking to expand the recording options for our students, SAE New Zealand is also keen to encourage more young women into the recording industry. With the rapid development of the New Zealand recording and film industries, there is an expanding range of opportunities in these and other creative industries. Consequently the recording provided us with the chance to show the young players the roles played by our two audio engineering students (male and female) and to discuss with them the available career opportunities.

SAE NEW ZEALAND STUDENT WINS MACKIE CONTEST

Feb/March 2005
BEN BURCHER, SAE graduate from Auckland New Zealand, was one of the five main winners of the recent SAE/Mackie worldwide promotional Tracktion recording contest.

Students from all forty four SAE Institutes around the world were invited to record an original project with Mackie’s new software program ‘Tracktion’. Every participant received a prize of a fully registered version of the ‘Tracktion’ software.

The grand prize for the five top projects worldwide was the ‘Mackie Spike’ recording hardware bundled with Tracktion. An international jury comprised of SAE and Mackie professionals awarded Ben the second place.

“I was totally surprised, I never expected this”, says the smiling winner. Ben’s original prize was delayed, so instead he opted for a Mackie VLZ Pro console. “I am actually going overseas soon, so a little mixer will come in handy for recording on the fly,” says Ben.

Congratulations to Ben from the SAE Auckland New Zealand team.
